Anyone who has driven a vehicle has at some point found themselves either behind or in front of an emergency vehicle. Whether this is an ambulance, fire truck, or police officer, it is not a courtesy it is the law that you must slow down and move over. Here are some tips to make it safer for you and the emergency vehicle:

  • Slow Down: Most states, including Idaho, recommend slowing down to a minimum of 10-20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.
  • Move Over: If you can do so safely slow down and move out of the lane in which the emergency vehicle is approaching. If the emergency vehicle is stopped move over and allow a safe distance between your vehicle and the emergency vehicle.
  • Stay Alert: You may hear or see one emergency vehicle, but there may be more depending on the call they are responding to. Keep alert and watch for more emergency vehicles or watch to see if they switch lanes or slow down and adjust your driving accordingly.

At Tom Scott Honda, we want to ensure the safety of all drivers and emergency vehicles, so please slow down and pull over when emergency vehicles are on the road.
