Getting stuck in snow, slush, and ice can be a harrowing experience. Many motorists put salt, sand or Kitty Litter in their trunks to provide traction should they become stuck. But which of the three is the best choice to keep in your vehicle for emergencies?
Rock salt is very effective for melting ice on driveways and streets and providing emergency traction for stuck motorists. But rock salt can be expensive, dissolves in water, corrodes the trunk if spilled and is an environmental hazard that's dangerous to plants and animals.
Kitty Litter absorbs moisture and can provide traction on snow, slush, and ice. It is moderately priced, but when it's soaked with water, it becomes slippery mush.
Regular sandbox sand is probably the best alternative. Although it doesn't melt ice, it's inexpensive, easy to find, and can be used in driveways or streets to provide traction in ice and snow.
